Origami Day

World Origami Day is celebrated every year from October 24 to November 11.

Origami comes from the two words ORI meaning folding and KAMI meaning paper.

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding.

The origin of Origami is not just Japan alone; there is evidence of paper folding tradition in other countries like China, Germany, Spain and Italy.

The famous origami figure is Crane bird which has become a symbol for world peace.

Guinness World Records

The largest display of origami elephants consists of 78,564 elephants, achieved by Wildlife Conservation Society (USA), at the Bronx Zoo in New York, New York, USA, on 17 November 2016.This attempt was done in order to raise awareness for elephant conservation.

The largest number of origami Cranes was created as part of the 50th anniversary of the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima. A total of 250,000 paper cranes were folded and displayed in a large memorial in the city. Each had a person’s name on it and a short peaceful message.

The smallest origami Crane in the world was made by Naito Akira folding plastic film measuring 0.1 by 0.1 mm. The 82-year old uses special tools and a microscope.
