World Turtle Day was started by the American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) in the year 2000. This day is celebrated worldwide to create awareness in protecting, caring and learning more about these oldest living reptiles in the world which have been around for more than 200 million years. Turtles live on every continent except Antarctica.

The SPECKLED PADLOPER TORTOISEor speckled cape tortoise is considered to be the world’s smallest turtle. Its average length is 2.5 to 3.9 inches and they weigh about 95–165 grams (3.4–5.8 oz.).
The largest turtle in the world is LEATHERBACK SEA TURTLEwhich weighs 650 kg (1430 lb.) / 210 cm (6.90 ft.)

The OLDEST LIVING TORTOISE by name Jonathan is 184 years old who lives in the Atlantic island of St.Helena.

You can celebrate the World Turtle Day by going for a turtle walk, saving turtles on roads, getting involved in research activities etc. If you happen to see any cruelty done to a turtle do not hesitate to report to the concerned officials.
