World Blood Donor Day is observed globally every year on June 14 which happens to be the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, a great scientist who won the Nobel Prize for his great discovery of the ABO blood group system.

It is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO declared 14th of June as World Blood Donor Day in 2004 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The aim is to bring awareness about safe blood donation voluntarily and unpaid.

*The theme of the 2016 World Blood Donor Day, 14 June, campaign is “BLOOD CONNECTS US ALL“. The objectives are to thank blood donors for their life-saving gift of blood and highlight the theme of blood connecting us all; to create wider public awareness of the need for regular blood donation, and inspire those who have not yet donated blood to start donating; to persuade countries to show appreciation to regular, voluntary, unpaid donors and commit to self-sufficiency in blood supply.

Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life.
