International Literacy Day was proclaimed by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on November 17, 1965. This event will mark the 50th anniversary of the World Congress of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy.

The day is observed to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Literacy plays the important role in human lives. Literacy is necessary for each and every individual to lead a happy and successful life.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines literacy as the “ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.
