NATIONAL TEDDY BEAR DAY
September 9, 2016

National Teddy Bear is celebrated on September 9, every year. Each and every one of us must have had a Teddy Bear as our favourite toy.
A teddy bear is a soft toy named after former U.S. President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt who was on a bear hunting trip refused to shoot a captured bear, as he was unable to find one to hunt. It has become a sensational news and made Clifford Berryman to publish a political cartoon in The Washington Post on November 16, 1902.

Teddy bear early 1900s in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Assumed to be manufactured by Benjamin Michton, son of the founder of Ideal Toy Company in 1903. Owned by Theodore Roosevelt’s grandson, Kermit Roosevelt.
Clifford Berryman cartoon has inspired Morris Michtom to create a soft bear cub and named it “Teddy’s Bear”, after getting permission from Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt to use his name. It was a grand success and that made Morris Michtom become the owner of Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
The popular brands of teddy bears are Gund, Ty Inc., Teddy Ruxpin and Care Bears.

Many books have been written featuring Teddy as the main character which include Winnie-the-Pooh, Teddy Tells Time, Corduroy, Tristan the Teddy Bear and Teddy Dressing. Many TV shows and movies are made having teddy bear as the main character.
Not just books and movies, a melody was also composed with the title “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic” by John Walter Bratton in 1907 for which lyrics were written by Jimmy Kennedy in 1932.
