At the time of fever parents should not be too anxious and panicky. To bring down the temperature medicines should not be given at hourly interval or so.
Normal temperature of the body and when to say it as fever should be known to the parents.
Normally everybody will have body temperature of 97-99 degree F. If the body temperature is more than 99 degree F we can label it as fever.
How to measure the temperature should also be known to the parents. There are thermometers for measuring the temperature.
Varieties of thermometers are available nowadays. They are glass thermometer, Tape thermometer, Rectal Thermometer, electronic or digital thermometer.
Glass thermometer can be kept in the mouths and axilla to record the body temperature. Likewise digital thermometer can also be used. Tape thermometer should be kept over the forehead to record the body temperature.
Temperature measured with the Rectal thermometer will exactly give the temperature of the internal organs of the body.
To measure the temperature the tip of the thermometer should be kept in the axilla and the upper arm should be kept close to the chest for 1-2 minutes. Then the temperature can be seen after removing it from the axilla.
Children below 5 years should have their temperature checked by keeping the thermometer in the axilla. Thermometer should not be kept in the mouths for the fear of breakage.
Temperature recorded at the rectum will be usually more than the temperature recorded at the mouth Appraximately 1 degree F will be more if recorded from the rectum.
