An infant who is affected by tetanus may find difficulty in opening the mouth for feeding due to lockjaw.
Along with lockjaw the infant will bend stiffly and the child will be having tonic convulsions.
Tetanus is a dreadful disease and to prevent it, it is essential to give a protective injection during the pregnancy itself.
Still, even now in villages the umbilical cord is cut with rusted knife and blade. That should be forbidden.
Normally, 60% of babies born will have jaundice for 2nd or 3rd day to 6 or 7 days. It is called as physiological Jaundice.
There may not be need for any special treatment for the physiological jaundice. Just exposing the baby in the direct sunlight in the early morning will be adequate.
In summer, if the new born are not fed with adequate water, they may lose their body water and develop fever.
So, it is better to give boiled and cooled water after breast feeds.
The left over milk of previous feed in bottle should not be fed again.
Feeding either by the mother or by bottle should be given in a proper position. Moreover, while bottle feeding babies should be held in a proper position so that milk easily flows to the babies mouth.
