Official Name: Republic of Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is a former Soviet republic in the Caucasus, is bounded on the north by Russia, on the east by the Caspian Sea, on the south by Iran, on the west by Armenia, and on the northwest by Georgia. Historically, the name Azerbaijan refers to a larger region that formed part of Persia (Iran). It is the 113th largest nation in the world with a total area of 86,600 square kilometres.
