International Day of Charity

September 5, 2017

The International Day of Charity is celebrated annually on 5 September. The day was proposed by Hungary in 2011 and declared officially by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.

From 2013 the day was observed globally to raise awareness among the people to help and eradicate poverty all over the world, regardless of their economic, social and cultural situation.

The date September 5 was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the founder of Missionaries of Charity, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.” For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying.

On this day people are encouraged and requested to donate money to implement the charity related activities to the needy throughout the world.
