International Day For The Elimination Of Violence

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
November 25, 2016

SILENT TEARS

“Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation, public health pandemic and serious obstacle to sustainable development. It imposes large-scale costs on families, communities and economies. The world cannot afford to pay this price.” — Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women has been designated by the United Nations General Assembly. It is observed for 16 days from November 25 to December 10.

One in three women around the world experience violence in their lifetime, often in the hands of someone they know, love and trust. Of all women who were victims of homicide globally in 2012, almost half were killed by intimate partners or family members.

Violence against women and girls has a devastating impact on individuals and on the society. Women and girls who experience violence lose their dignity, they live in fear and pain, and in the worst cases they pay with their lives.

The UN Secretary-General’s campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women’s call for action is themed ‘Orange the World: Raise Money to End Violence against Women and Girls’, to amplify and address the funding shortfall.
