National Pollution Control Day is observed every year on December 2 in India to honor and memorialize the people who lost their lives in Bhopal gas mishap. The disaster happened in the year 1984 on the night of 2nd and 3rd December.
Thousands of people died due to the unexpected discharge of nearly 45 tons of poisonous gas Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) from the Union Carbide Chemical plant, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Over 500,000 people were exposed to this deadly gas.
Bhopal Gas Tragedy is considered to be the world’s worst industrial disaster. The death toll was initially 8000 and went up to 30000 over the years.
Objectives of the day:
To spread awareness on managing and controlling industrial disasters.
To prevent the pollution produced by industrial processes or human negligence.
To make people and industries aware about the importance of pollution control acts.
