Navy Day

In India Navy Day is observed on December 4 every year to celebrate the excellence, achievements and role of the naval force to the country. Indian navy is the branch of the armed forces that guards the country’s coastal areas.
Commanded by the President of India and the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), the navy plays an important role in maintaining peaceful relations with its neighbouring countries on the maritime front. The Maratha emperor, Chhatarpati Shivaji Bhosle of the 17th century is considered as “Father of the Indian Navy”.
Why Navy Day in India is celebrated on December 4?
During the India-Pakistan war of 1971, the Indian Navy played a significant role in the bombing of the Karachi harbour. The name of the operation was Operation Trident. This operation also marked the first use of anti-ship missiles in the region launching a fast naval strike on Pakistan’s naval headquarters in Karachi. With no damage to the naval ships and no casualties, the operation is remembered as the most successful attack launched by the Indian Navy.
