Scrabble Day

April 13, 2017

Scrabble Day is observed annually on April 13 and it is also the birthday of Alfred Mosher Butts, inventor of the popular board game “SCRABBLE”.

Alfred Mosher Butts an American architect invented this crossword game in the year 1938. The game was originally named “Lexiko”. It was then changed to “Criss-Cross Worlds”, and finally came to be known as “Scrabble”.

The game is played by two to four players on a square board with a 15×15 grid of cells (individually known as “squares”), each of which accommodates a single letter tile. In official club and tournament games, play is between two players or, occasionally, between two teams each of which collaborates on a single rack.

In the United States and Canada, the name Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro, Inc. and in rest of the world it is the trademark of Mattel. The game is sold in 121 countries and is available in 29 languages; approximately 150 million sets have been sold worldwide. There are around 4,000 Scrabble clubs around the world.
