Theme for 2016: Hands up for #HIVprevention
World AIDS Day is held on the 1st December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to memorialize people who have died.
World AIDS Day is one of the eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO). It was conceived by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter in 1987 and observed every year since 1988.
As of 2013, AIDS has killed more than 34 million people worldwide (1981-2012), and an estimated 35.3 million people are living with HIV, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.
Observing World AIDS Day is very essential because it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – still there is a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight discrimination and improve education.
World AIDS Day is an opportunity to show support, love, care and affection to the millions of people living with HIV. Wearing a red ribbon is one simple way to do this.
