THEME FOR 2016: ELIMINATION
World Hepatitis Day, observed on July 28 every year globally. It is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Approximately 500 million people worldwide are living with either hepatitis B or hepatitis C. If left untreated it can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver cancer or liver failure.
The aim is to raise awareness of HEPATITIS, an infectious disease which affects millions of people around the world. Statistics show that every year around 1.4 million people are killed by Hepatitis.
What is Hepatitis?
Viruses HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV that affects the Liver and cause inflammation is called Hepatitis. The liver is one of the largest and important organs of human body. The liver is responsible for many important functions such as regulation of glycogen, vitamins and minerals storage, controls the production and excretion of cholesterol, production and excretion of bile, filtering toxins from the body, blood detoxification and purification, synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin and clotting factors.
On World Hepatitis day, WHO (World Health Organization) calls on policy-makers, health workers and the public to “KNOW HEPATITIS – ACT NOW”
It is time to know more about hepatitis virus infection and act accordingly to reduce or avoid deaths from this preventable and curable infection.
