World Oceans Day is observed annually on June 8 around the world.

The oceans cover about two-thirds of the surface of the Earth and are the very foundations of life. Oceans are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe.

The theme of 2018 is “Preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean”

Plastic pollution is causing tremendous harm to our marine resources. For example:

80% of all pollution in the ocean comes from people on land.

8 million tonnes of plastic per year ends up in the ocean, wreaking havoc on wildlife, fisheries and tourism.

Plastic pollution costs the lives of 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals per year.

Fish eat plastic, and we eat the fish.

Plastic causes $8 billion in damage to marine ecosystems each year.

Use less plastic and recycle the plastic you must use.

In 2002, Bangladesh the first country in the world to implement a ban on thin plastic bags, after it was found they played a key role in clogging drainage systems during disastrous flooding. Other countries begin to follow suit.

.In 2017, Kenya bans plastic bags; making it one the most recent of the more than two dozen countries that have sought to reduce plastic bag use through fees or bans.

Every year, on 31 May, world Health Organization (WHO) and its partners, including the World Heart Federation (WHF), mark World No Tobacco Day to highlight the health and other risks associated with tobacco use and advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is “Tobacco and heart disease.”

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills more people than any other cause of death worldwide.

Tobacco use is also the second leading cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), after high blood pressure. Tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure contribute to approximately 12% of all heart disease deaths.

Facts

Tobacco kills up to half of its users.

Tobacco kills more than 7 million people each year. More than 6 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 890 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

Around 80% of the world’s 1.1 billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries.

In some countries, children from poor households are employed in tobacco farming to provide family income. These children are especially vulnerable to “green tobacco sickness”, which is caused by the nicotine that is absorbed through the skin from the handling of wet tobacco leaves.

There are more than 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, of which at least 250 are known to be harmful and more than 50 are known to cause cancer.

Almost half of children regularly breathe air polluted by tobacco smoke in public places.

Second-hand smoke causes more than 890 000 premature deaths per year.

In 2004, children accounted for 28% of the deaths attributable to second-hand smoke.

In adults, second-hand smoke causes serious cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, including coronary heart disease and lung cancer. In infants, it causes sudden death. In pregnant women, it causes low birth weight.

This year, the United Nations celebrates the 70th anniversary of UN peacekeeping.

The first UN peacekeeping mission was established on 29 May 1948.

The day offers a chance to pay tribute to the contributions of uniformed and civilian personnel and to honour more than 3,700 peacekeepers who have lost their lives serving under the UN flag since 1948, including 129 who died last year.

The theme for the 2018 International Day of UN Peacekeepers is “70 Years of Service and Sacrifice.”

Over seven decades, more than one million men and women have served under the United Nations flag in 71 peacekeeping operations, protecting the world’s most vulnerable and saving countless lives.

UN peacekeepers make immense sacrifices, often serving at great personal risk and under challenging conditions. The families of peacekeepers and their governments share this sacrifice.

Today, UN peacekeeping deploys more than 100,000 military, police and civilian personnel in 14 peacekeeping operations on four continents.

While the International Day of United Nations Peacekeeper’s Day is 29 May, UN Headquarters in New York will celebrate it this year on 1 June.

The Secretary-General will preside over a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of all peacekeepers who have lost their lives while serving under the UN flag. In addition, the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal will be awarded posthumously to the peacekeepers who died in 2017 while serving in the cause of peace.

Barbados in the Eastern Caribbean is an independent island nation is in the North Atlantic Ocean, northeast of Venezuela that is often portrayed as the Little Britain of the Caribbean because of its long association with the UK as a British colony.

The name “Barbados” comes from a Portuguese explorer named Pedro Campos in 1536, who originally called the island Os Barbados (“The Bearded Ones”), after the appearance of the island’s fig trees, whose long hanging aerial roots resembled beards.

 The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was built around 435 BC.

 Zeus was considered to be the god of the sky, thunder, lighting, law, justice, order and the father of the Olympic Games.

 A temple was built for Zeus at Olympia between 466-456 BC and it was designed by architect Libon.

 The wonderful huge statue was sculpted by a legendary Athenian sculptor Phidias who was assisted by his pupils Panainos and Kolotis

 Statue of Zeus was erected in the Temple of Zeus at the sanctuary of Olympia

 It took 12 years to complete this wonder.

 The statue measured around 42 Ft. (13m) tall and the base 21 Ft. (6m) wide. Its perimeter was 43 Ft.(13m)

 The figure of Zeus was seated on a huge throne that was 22 feet wide which was almost touching the roof.

 Strabo, the noted geographer once commented, if Zeus were to come to life and stand up, “he would unroof the temple”

 The throne was made from cedar wood and decorated with precious stones, ivory, gold and ebony.

 In his right hand Zeus held a figure of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory and in his left hand was eagle headed sceptre.

 The depictions of the Statue of Zeus are based on historical descriptions and depictions on Ancient Greek coins.

 The statue was transported by a Greek named Lausus to his palace in the city of Constantinople.

 It was damaged in a massive earthquake and repaired.

 The statue remained there until it was destroyed by fire which swept through the city in 475 AD.

 Today nothing remains at the site except rocks and debris, fallen columns and the foundation of the buildings.

 But the huge statue stood strong in the temple at Olympia for more than 800 years.

World Ovarian Cancer Day (WOCD) is commemorated every year on May 8th, around the world to raise awareness about ovarian cancer. The first World Ovarian Cancer Day took place in 2013. World Ovarian Cancer Day is an initiative of the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition.

STATISTICS
Ovarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer, and the eighth most common cause of death from cancer in women in the world.

230,000+ women around the world are diagnosed annually with ovarian cancer.

600,000+ women around the world are within 5 years of an ovarian cancer diagnosis.

150,000+ deaths are caused by ovarian cancer every year.

By 2035:
55% rise in the number of new cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed each year.

70% rise in the number of deaths from ovarian.

5 FACTS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT OVARIAN CANCER

1. A Pap Test (cervical smear test) does not detect ovarian cancer. There is currently no screening test for ovarian cancer.

2. Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage.

3. Diagnosing ovarian cancer before it spreads makes it much more treatable.

4. Symptom awareness may lead to a quicker diagnosis.

5. All women are at a risk of ovarian cancer.

WHAT IS OVARIAN CANCER?

Ovarian cancer is cancer arising from the cells in and around the ovaries and fallopian tubes. There are many different types of ovarian tumours.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF OVARIAN CANCER?

Common symptoms of ovarian cancer:
Bloating – increased abdominal size / persistent bloating
(not bloating that comes and goes)
Eating Complications – difficulty eating / feeling full quickly
Pain – in pelvic or abdominal areas
Urinary symptoms – urgency or frequency

Occasionally, there can be other symptoms such as:
Changes in bowel habits
Abnormal bleeding
Extreme fatigue
Unexplained weight loss

Any bleeding after the menopause should always be investigated by a doctor.

The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7 April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as other related organizations

Theme 2018: Universal Health Coverage: Everyone, Everywhere.

“Universal” in UHC means “for all”, without discrimination, leaving no one behind. Everyone everywhere has a right to benefit from health services they need without falling into poverty when using them.

Some facts and figures about the state of UHC today:

Half the world lacks access to Essential health services.

Almost 100 million people are being pushed into extreme poverty, because they have to pay for health services out of their own pockets.

Over 800 million people (almost 12 percent of the world’s population) spend at least 10 percent of their household budgets to pay for health care.

All UN Member States have agreed to try to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.

 The Great Pyramid of Giza, oldest of all the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain, stands on the northern edge of the Giza Plateau.

 It is located about 10 miles West of Cairo.

 It is also known as the Pyramid of KHUFU or the Pyramid of CHEOPS.

 The word Pyramid is derived from the Greek words PYRAMIS and PYRAMIDOS.

 The Great Pyramid is said to have been erected around 2600 B.C. during the reign of Khufu (Cheops)

 The Great Pyramid of Giza is thought to have been built as a tomb for Pharoah Khufu, who ruled in the Fourth Egyptian Dynasty and died in 2566 BC.

 Inside the Pyramid there are three main chambers; the King’s Chamber, the Queen’s Chamber and the Grand Gallery.

 The Khufu Pyramid or The Great Pyramid of Giza is the most gigantic single building and the largest Pyramid ever erected on earth.

 To create this marvellous structure, around 2,300,000 limestone blocks, each weighing an average of 2.5 tons.

 Some blocks that weigh over 50 tons were used and the total weight was estimated around 5.75 million ton is a masterpiece which took 20 long years to complete with high level engineering ability and technical skill.

 The Great Pyramid was originally 471 feet (143 meters) high Covering an area of 13 acres.

 Giza.There has been no writing or hieroglyphics found inside the Great Pyramid of Giza.

 The interior temperature is constant and equals the average temperature of the earth, 20 Degrees Celsius (68 Degrees Fahrenheit).
